Climate change, government sponsored Superfund cleanup sites, genetically modified organisms, pollution… the inherent meaning of “landscape” is shifting from picturesque to profane throughout our surrounding world. Pivoting on the threat the enigmatic figures may imply, or the reaction they may provoke, these social interventions reflect a collective awareness of how humans now view the landscapes we are ultimately responsible for creating. Working under the pseudonym AREAJohn Wesley Mannion and Sean Hovendick combine performance with photographic documentation to investigate this shift and the evolving relationship of people and place.
